Getting there is that you do well in school, but what we find is that what is taught in the classroom does not always prepare students for the work environment. In school, students do learn theories, ideas and key skills which they will use in their careers, but the work setting is a different animal. That is what internships are for.

An internship is a chance for students to step into a real-world setting before they transition into full-time roles. In which they also get to see how companies run, work with different teams, take on responsibility and put into practice what they have learned in school. Also, they have the chance to see what employers look for in their employees.

During my time as an intern, I have seen it is the supervisor which approaches the student for clarification of issues, the student which has to put forward a solution to a problem, which also includes fielding a customer’s inquiry and at the same time sharing info with a colleague. Out of these experiences, the student grows in communication skills.

Internships also show that in communication, it is not enough for a student to speak. They also have to be a good listener. A student which pays close attention gets more out of the experience and also reduces the number of errors they make.

Many students are to which they put foot out the door into their first full-time job. They may worry how they will do at it, going to drop a ball, speaking up in front of seniors, and taking care of things that are new and different.
